Five Minute Friday = prompt word, five minutes, just write.
This weeks prompt word: Doubt
My boy has his doubts about God. On a bad day when things have caved in -he asks – “but how do you know”, “why can’t we see”, “what if He’s not there”. And theres no easy answers because well we all have our doubts sometimes but I tell him it’s OK because God IS and nothing frightens Him or puts Him off us, that its OK to wonder and ask questions, to search and ponder because God is near and won’t let him go.
I tell him that doubt is part of faith and if we believe in a big God then we believe He is big enough to handle our questioning, our “how comes” and “why for’s” and “why not’s” – all of us in our entirety.
I tell him we aren’t so perfect that we believe perfectly all the time. None of us do.
Doubt reminds us we are flesh and blood, that we live our lives for the most part in the touch and see, here and now and believing some days feels like a stretch, a leap for us mortals things and we need God even to believe. But oh look what happens when we do – mortal gives way to immortal, the shape and feel of things change, there is colour and dimension when before there was none, we see things differently, our eyes open, our heart finds it’s home.
Faith it doesn’t make sense to this world but it makes sense of everything.
That’s a lot for a 12 year old – but he get’s the heart bit, I ask him “what does your heart say”? He knows God knew him and named him before I did and He knows there’s a plan bigger than mine and bigger than his.
God bless my boy, I like his honesty.
I can’t help think of this scripture on the days that I struggle.
And Jesus said to him, “‘If You can?’ All things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, “I do believe; help my unbelief.” Mark 9:23-24
And these lyrics from one of my all time favourite Kate Miner songs “We Believe”
You whom we cannot see, You whom we cannot feel , You whom we have not touched.
Well we see you, We hear you, We feel you – – and blessed are we for we believe.
